Has Michael Weiss coached his final match with the Philippine Azkals?
Rumors were circulating yesterday that Weiss will be let go as coach of the national team once his contract expires next week.
It appears the management has made a decision to end its three-year relationship with the German mentor after months of speculation that he will be replaced by a big-name coach in time for two major tournaments in 2014.
The Philippine Football Federation and Azkals team manager Dan Palami have yet to make an official statement and were unavailable for comment.
Weiss was hired almost exactly three years ago to replace British mentor Simon McMenemy, who coached the Azkals to their Cinderella semifinal run in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup.
Under Weiss, the Azkals finished third in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, Nepal and made the semifinals of the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup before losing to eventual champion Singapore.
Weiss also steered the national side to the second round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in 2011 where the Azkals lost to Kuwait.
The Azkals will compete in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup in Maldives and the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup in Singapore or Vietnam.
The team has also scheduled training camps abroad to boost their preparation for the Challenge Cup in May.
