Two-run homer lifts NU Bulldogs

Alfredo Olivarez smashed a fifth-inning two-run homerun and reliever Aries Oruga foiled Ateneo’s rally in the last four innings as National University eked out a hard-earned 6-5 win against the Blue Eagles to take the first final berth of the first Chairman Cup Baseball Classic at the Rizal Memorial diamond.

Strikeout in his first time at bat in the second frame, the 6-foot Olivarez went 4-for-3 with two RBIs, including the game clinching two runs homer in the fifth inning to power the Bulldogs to the finals and avenged their defeat to the Blue Eagles in the UAAP.

Olivarez, playing catcher, carried Miguel Dumlao’s third pitch to left for his ace and sixth overall in the tournament held in honor of Chairman Ricardo Garcia and gave the former UAAP champion the twice-to-beat advantage. (Clyde Mariano)
