PLDT, Army tipped to clash in finals

Games today (Ynares Sports Arena)
2 pm – TMS-Army vs Cagayan
4 pm – PLDT-MyDSL vs Cignal

Bets are on heavyweights PLDT-MyDSL and TMS-Philippine Army to book a finals showdown when they tackle separate semifinal foes today in the women’s division of Philippine Super Liga (PSL) Volleyball Grand Prix at the Ynares Sports Arena.

Unbeaten in the eliminations, the Speed Boosters test the strength of Cignal HD Spikers at 4 pm while the TMS-Army Lady Troopers clash with Cagayan Valley Lady Rising Suns at 2 pm.

Systema and PLDT-MyDSL will collide for the men’s crown. The finals are set next Saturday.

Systema overcame Giligan’s Restaurant while PLDT-MyDSL survived Maybank in their men’s semifinal groupings last Wednesday.

The Lady Troopers possess an edge in experience against the Lady Rising Suns as they have won the PSL’s debut Invitational Conference and will aim for back-to-back titles in this tournament organized by Sports Core and recognized by the International Volleyball Federation with Mikasa, Asics, LGR and Jinling Sports as main backers and Solar Sports as broadcast partner..

It is different, however, in the PLDT-MyDSL semis clash as the Speed Boosters are tipped to frustrate the HD Spikers, runners-up to the Lady Troopers in the Invitationals, once again.

An off-season recruitment spree by the Speed Boosters will be put to the test but the team has proved itself when it swept the five-game eliminations via impressive fashion, enough to for the Boosters to gain an automatic semifinals berth.

PLDT-MyDSL coach Roger Gorayeb credits their success to the hard-hitting pair from United States – Kaylee Manns and Savannah Noyes, who are attracting fans to the game venues.

The HD Spikers, who had to notch a 19-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-22 win over Petron in the quarterfinals, wouldn’t be an easy target as they are peaking at the right time. In fact, bulk of their points over the Blaze Spikers came from open spiker Danila Gendrauli, giving their imports Lei Xie and Li Zhangzhan the luxury to train their focus on defense.

On the other hand, TMS-Philippine Army is also tipped to clinch a return to the final after winning all but one game in the elimination round. The Lady Troopers’ lone loss came from the Speed Boosters.

Cagayan Valley advanced to the semis via a masterful 25-21, 25-18, 15-25, 25-9 win over newcomer RC Cola in the quarterfinals despite an injury to its Thai import Wanida Kotruang.
