Matthew Laurel scored two home runs, including a rare grand slam, and Nacho Cojaungco gamely held his mound as reigning UAAP champion Ateneo blasted fellow unbeaten archrival La Salle, 7-1, yesterday in the first PSC Chairman Cup Baseball Classic at the Rizal Memorial Diamond.
Playing catcher, Laurel slammed a solo homer in the third inning and recorded the rare grand slam off starter Miguel Olmos in the fourth, sending the ball flying to the nearby football field as the Blue Eagles reaffirmed their mastery of the Green Archers that they humbled in the recent UAAP competition.
Laurel hit the ball solid flying over to the football field and became the first player to hit back-to-back homeruns and the first to hit grand slam and four round trippers in the three-week competition held in honor of PSC Chairman Ricardo Garcia.
Ateneo, seeking to annex the title after winning the UAAP at the expensed of defending champion National University, outhit and outran the two-time UAAP champion La Salle.
The win was Ateneo’s third straight and took the solo lead, breaking away from National University and Adamson with similar 2-0 cards. (Clyde Mariano)
