Pirates snap losing season skid

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AFP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a streak of 20 straight losing seasons in Major League Baseball by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 at Miller Park on Tuesday.

Travis Snider lifted the Pirates to their 81st win of the season by blasting a lead off home run in the ninth inning in front of a crowd of 25,558. The Pirates have 57 losses and a .587 winning percentage with just over three weeks left in the regular season.

Snider’s pinch-hit blast to right-centre field off Brewers ace Jim Henderson was the lone hit that didn’t come from the Pirates’ 3-4-5 batting order combo of Andrew McCutchen, Justin Morneau and Marlon Byrd.

The trio finished seven-for-10, with McCutchen smashing his 100th career homer and Byrd earning two RBIs.

Pittsburgh is now two games up on St. Louis for first place in the National League Central. The Cardinals lost to the Reds in Cincinnati earlier Tuesday.
