Six-peat seeking Ateneo survived the furious comeback bid of struggling Adamson, 79-66, to notch its fifth straight victory in UAAP Season 76 yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Blue Eagles enjoyed a 27-point lead in the early stages of the fourth quarter when the Falcons countered by a big 19-0 run to pull within eight points.

But Kiefer Ravena refused to let his team suffer a gigantic meltdown, hitting nine of his 18 points in the payoff period to post a winning record for the first time this season.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University survived two grueling overtime periods to escape with a 98-94 victory over University of the East and snap a two-game losing skid in the second game.

Ateneo improved to 5-4, boosting its chances of making the Final Four. The Eagles could end up tied for fourth if University of the East (5-3) loses to Far Eastern University at presstime.

“It’s been quite a while since we’ve been over .500 and I think the team has adjusted well. We’re happy but we’re definitely not satisfied because our goal is not to end the season on a winning record but to get the six-peat,” Ravena said.

Graduating forward Ryan Buenafe also scored 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals as Ateneo beat Adamson for the 33rd time in the last 34 games while enhancing its bid to enter the Final Four.

“(This win) is not going to be significant if we’re not going to win the next one,” said coach Bo Perasol, whose squad is scheduled to face FEU on Wednesday and archrival Ateneo on Sunday.
